A
large congregation gathered outside the new Southlakes
Parish church building at noon on Saturday 2 December
2006 for the dedication of the building under the patronage
of All Saints. The Bishop of Newcastle, the Rt Rev'd
Dr Brian Farran presided over the service, during which
we were reminded by The Bishop that the real church
is us, the people of God in this place. The service
was attended by Regional Bishop Graeme Rutherford,
Bishop Johannes Angelo of the Kenyan Diocese of Bondo,
our Area Dean Selwyn Dornan, former parish priests,
clergy from other denominations, Mr Jeff Hunter,
our local state member of parliament, former parishioners
and visiting clergy and lay people from this and other
dioceses. It was a wonderful service with well-deserved
acknowledgements made to all the people who put in countless
hours of work to bring the project to fruition. Fr Stephen
Pullin, whose dream it was - Fr Glen Pope, whose nightmare
it became for a time - building supervisor David Peterson
and his right-hand man Barry Hanger - the multi-skilled
construction gang of willing workers and the
back-up crew of many support helpers who fed
and encouraged the team and upheld them in prayer throughout
the project. Also acknowledged were the contractors,
not only for their cooperation, but also for their generosity.
